5 Things You Should Know about Nursing Pumps October 6, 2015 16:11

As a new mom, we know that you are getting a lot of advice–both solicited and unsolicited–from friends and family about everything to do with your baby. This includes the sensitive issue of breastfeeding and selecting a breast pump. Here are 5 things you should know when you are trying to find and buy the best nursing pump for you and your new baby.

Frequency of Pumping

First, you will need to know how often you plan to pump. If you are going to be going back to work full time or will otherwise be away from your baby for several hours, then considering a nursing pump that is both fast and efficient will be your best bet. Babies, newborns especially, need to eat every 2 to 3 hours so keep this frequency in mind when choosing the best pump.

Electric or Battery Powered

Next consider whether you should choose an electric or battery powered unit. You will find that a battery-powered unit works well enough for you if you only need to pump 1 or 2 times a day. However, consider a more expensive electric pump if you require more frequent pumping than that, as battery-powered units drain batteries quickly and pump much slower than electric models do.

Manual or Automatic

There are benefits of both manual and automatic pumps. Automatic pumps are generally larger, although you will spend less time pumping. Manual nursing pumps are much more portable and, therefore, more discreet than using an automatic pump.

Dual or Single

At OurPerfectBaby.com, we have found that single pumps work well if your child prefers one breast over another or even refuses to latch on one side as many infants do. A dual pump is good again for speed and efficiency but requires both hands, whereas a single pump may be easier to use on the go.

Price

Whatever your pumping needs are, you can find a pump that will work for you within your budget. Keep in mind though that the higher end, electrical breast pumps, you might need to pay more, but chances are you will never have to buy another one.
